Issues

School Safety

I will work to provide a School Resource Officer (SRO) in every HCPS not only for the safety/security aspects but, also for the vital role modeling in reaching the “at risk” students as well. SROs are highly trained to identify the needs of the student body and are capable to address any issues that may affect the student in or outside the school setting.

Community Commitment

I have many community commitment programs that I plan to implement once in office that will bring forth a stronger, community-oriented policing format that will enable the Henry County Sheriff’s Office to better serve our community as a whole.

Stronger Leadership

I am forming a new, stronger administration with a vast assortment of years of law enforcement experience that will lead the Henry County Sheriff’s Office in the direction that will benefit the office and community as a whole.

As Your Sheriff, my priorities will include:

=

Opioid Epidemic

Henry County has the highest opioid death statistics, triple the rate as anywhere else throughout the state according to a recent Department of Health report. From 2011 to 2016, opioid overdoses caused 53 deaths in Henry County and Martinsville, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health. In Henry County, 38 people died from prescription opioid overdoses and six people, from fentanyl and/or heroin overdoses. In Martinsville, five people died from prescription opioid overdoses and four from fentanyl or heroin overdoses.
Collins, P. (2015, December 29). Opioid abuse is epidemic in U.S.

=

Raising crime statistics/unsolved homicide cases

Recent years (2015 – 2017) Virginia State Police annual crime statistics report shows rising crime stats and lower populations in Henry County. Also, in recent years, Henry County Sheriff’s Office has many unsolved homicides that left many families with unanswered questions. (Collins, P. (2019, January 30). How did my sister die? Woman wants answers about year-old case from Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

=

Lack of leadership causing deputy retention issues

In recent years, the Henry County Sheriff’s Office has suffered the loss of over 50% of the entire force of seasoned law enforcement officers. This is not just the result of untimely retirements, low pay, and negative public perception towards law enforcement as the current sheriff would have you believe.

=

Irresponsible Administration

The current administration has poor leadership skills, which lacks the ability to inspire, retain, or recruit seasoned law enforcement officers. For these reasons, the morale of the office is extremely low, which in turn creates a lack of enthusiasm and poor job performance, which directly affects YOU, the citizens of Henry County.
